Jim Burnside So true JIMMY. We just had an Italian deli close by me. In business 60 yrs same family but very minimal business last 2 yrs or so. But the whole week of closing they were slammed and people like NOOO don't shut down. And it was like really? Where were ya last year or more when we were struggling to pay light billl?
Margaret Siemers, Yes indeed! I have been a reader of this publication for at least fifty years. My favorite issue was the one when they first set out to do a serious and consistent evaluation of quality cameras. They did the Leica M4 and the Nikon F. And after reading their shake down trials of both, ended up getting both cameras, when I could afford them. :-)
+Jim Burnside I try to give the local stores my business and do in many cases, but I have to be frugal too. I am hard-wired that way. For instance, today I went to 2 pet stores for Frontline. You can get a 3 dose pack for $25 online. Amazon Prime has it for $35. My regular pet store had it for $47.95. Thanks, no. I saw that the local pet supply chain had it for $35 so I went there. Well, it was $35 on their site but it was $58.95 in their store. They were not even being competitive with their own website. I talked to them and they "matched" their own price & got the sale. I remember when many retailers would say "we don't compete with online prices". Many of them have gone out of business. Retail has to change, acknowledge all their competitors or everything will be mail order and it will be a loss for us all. It's not an easy time for small businesses.
It is hard to know how we can have a balance in the two sides, but I am always happy to hear intelligent thoughts from both sides. Thank you for your input on this subject Steve Hart. I have noticed that places with a presence both on line and in stores are giving better deals to one or the other at a time (sales promo) Makes me wonder if they are testing to see which venue is more profitable for them. Personally I like being able to go to a store and see things. However at Holiday Time I want nothing to do with the crowds there. Or I need the convenience of having something sent to me because of my health. I would hope to see both continue and flourish.
I still have one of those F bodies and lenses.
