The Ladies Home Journal, .25, December, 1951. Here’s what was happening: I Love Lucy premiered as well as the popular American in Paris and The Day the Earth Stood Still movies. What’s My Line debuted on BBC. The average house cost $9,000. and the average American wage was $3,510. Perry Como and Nat King Cole we’re beloved and the term Rock and Roll was coined. Coast to Coast direct dial telephone service began and the first color TV images were broadcast. And of great importance, the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified limiting the term of the President to 8 years. (I never imagined that 8 years would seem like eternity but let’s not ruin our happy holidays thinking about it.)

  2. Laurent Truillet two if were lucky. They must be re-elected every 4 years, but can't serve more than 8.

Ann Kennedy, it's hard to believe that it only took mankind 67 years to mess up so badly with technology, and most of that in just the last 20 years. (referring to the privacy issues and other related internet fiasco's happening.)
It makes me wonder why we don't regulate things better before they get so bad.

Love the magazine and the information. You are wonderful.

  3. Margaret Siemers I was thinking the same thing. Looking through these magazines I am always conflicted in wondering whether or not we’ve made any progress at all, or whether every generation experiences new inventions only to long for them once they’re gone.! Thank you, Margaret, I thought while I have these magazines out I’ll try and share the covers through the holidays if I can find time.

  4. Ann Kennedy Don't worry if you don't have the time, so few of us have time for much of anything in December. However what you post is very much appreciated.

  5. Laurent Truillet Only 6 is a very long time! That’s a lot of suffering!

  6. Ann Kennedy "Only" 6 was just an ironic way to say things. And if I can reassure you, we are also suffering from the same disease over here.

We can talk for ages an write countless pages on the debate about modern inventions being good or bad. I think an invention cannot be bad "per se", it's the increasing number of mentally insane people who use them that make them bad. Let's think of the Internet, the satellite and street views, google maps, the e-mails, social networks. All these inventions are marvellous. But once they are used to convey the increasing level of hatred circulating on earth now, I think they ought to be stopped. So let's stop them. Unplug Google, unplug Microsoft, Facebook and so many others, cut off all telephones and go back riding horses (I'm sure some people would love to do that...)
Before I close, here is a clever sentence I've heard concerning this discussion. Talking about road accidents, it's not the car that kills it's the driver...

  8. Laurent Truillet I think, responsibility for one's actions has been lost on the internet because of the ease of people hiding behind usernames. If you don't know who I am and I speak an untruth, how can I be held accountable? It has driven this country so much that we even stand behind great men that constantly speak untruths.
Perhaps a bit more from "Miss Manners" who once taught us all how to behave in public would be a good thing. ; )
