THE DYNAMO

THE DYNAMO
I visited our Science Museum in Liège yesterday. This photo shows the very first dynamo (delivering DC current) invented by Zenobe Gramme, who lived and worked in this area. A dynamo is also reversible. It can act as a motor.
The exhibit shown here is not a reproduction. It is the real thing dating back to 1869, and can be considered as the precursor of all electrical motors built in the world ever since.

  1. A science museum is always a fun visit. This looks so primitive compared to the complex engines today, but at the time I’m certain that people were amazed at what the potential might be for this dynamo. I wonder if the engine of the far future will be a computer chip.

  2. The amazing thig to consider is it will both generate rotation or electricity from opposite ends! :-)

  3. Wow! Love this kind of thing. I have a book called E=mc2. I learned so much about the history of the theory and the many people and their work that led Einstein to it. Amongst them were those that invented the basic electrical batteries and motors like this one.

  4. Fantastic share Laurent Truillet, without this invention we would not have the internet or be communicating right now! Boggles the mind when you think about it, and I love to think about things like that.
Then on the historical side of the coin is the fact that this is the original that was invented so long ago. I am pinning this to the top of the community. Thank you for thinking of us.
