I've read some disturbing news that google will be shutting down Google+ . In case this does happen, I wanted to take a quick moment to say thanks and goodbye to my The Vintage Life friends. I've truly enjoyed the conversations and online friends I've made in this group.

  1. Yea, it looks official. We have at most about a year. Not much in specifics. I hope we are given enough time to work out other options. SIGH

  2. This is not how I wanted to come back to you all! But this news from Google is just too disheartening for me to stay quiet.

I had hoped to give you all some good news that I should be getting after visiting my Hearing Specialist next friday. My long awaited operation has been approved by insurance and the date will be set soon for this.

So much for grand announcements, Google has upstaged me.

I understand that we have till next August to find another venue for our communities, and G+ may even make porting of photo's and such available. I will keep you updated as we find out more info.

That said, I would like to keep the community going. As Steve Hart said there are many wonderful people here (and I have been watching silently so I can say that with conviction)
I would love to know what other venues are out there that community users would like to see us on. (Please don't say facebook, I can't abide facebook)

  3. Margaret Siemers hopefully we'll have lots of options (social-network-that-shall-not-be-named, which I'm not a big fan of either, is kind of the elephant in the room)

  4. I only know Instagram and Pinterest. Neither of which allows you to have interactions like this very post (the longer back and forth we are doing) So I would like to have/find options for moving us.
I know I have been MIA for almost a full year, but I had good reasons, I truly do love this community and the people in it. So I hope folks will start suggesting good options for us.

  5. I don't like Facebook either. Reading G+ tonight it seems a lot of people are going to Pluspora: pluspora.com - pluspora

Also there are people going to www.mewe.com

I signed up to both just to check them out.

  6. Also here's an article on backing up your Google data. You can select just G+ posts and communities.

  7. Margaret Siemers Best wishes for a successful operation!

I too, have hated the mostly banal gossip on Facebook, but have, on the other hand, seen some good work in various groups. Together, we could probably make our little corner of Facebook a private refuge away from the general blah. A private group is what I would recommend, though I am a Facebook newbie and perhaps the FB veterans might have a better idea.

  8. Tom Brydon I will check out plusplora and mewe too.

  9. Margaret Siemers good luck with your operation!

  10. I've been on ello.co for a while but am not active there. It has a nice design. However, most of its members are photographers/artists. I believe it has some kind of support for communities.

  11. Steve Hart I put a lot of my photos on Ello. Yes, its definately an artist/creator site.

Also there is Minds, and Gab.

This morning I made a group for aviation on MeWe. Thats similar to a community here: it has similar rules about joining etc.

  12. Hi Everyone. This community taught me what it means to have online friends, to share meaningfully, to learn from others and to explore vintage pleasures with others online. I feel a great loss now. If there were viable alternatives other than FB, I would be delighted to hear of them. Tom Brydon please keep us posted about your experiences with the venues you are trying!

  13. Looking into pluspora haven't done nothing yet. Looked at mewe it has a limit on how much can be stored there then you have to pay for more nothing sure of yet I think I'm hoping this maybe Google take their head out of their ass and do what the Hangouts way jettison off what was left of Google Plus screw the stream forget the stream maybe make separate like Hangouts where you have to get the app in order to use Hangouts I don't understand why they can't make simply part of the Google services with Google Docs Google Drive have Google photos why not have Google communities and Google Collections as separate entities of Google but who knows.
I won't do Facebook ever not giving out my real name so I liked about Google Plus and Google in general

  14. I just feel so bad about this move on Google's part. Violated if you will, by the entire "we don't want to play any more so were taking our bat and ball and going home." Usually I'm a little Pollyanna about life's kicks to the face, but this has just totally made the "Can you top this" of kicks to Pollyanna's backside.

We have been sidelined because we are not a profit for Google, and pose far too many problems for them. I guess looking at this from the corporate side of things that makes sense. Only the non paying public side is being axed, the paying Enterprise side will still be here.

So who wants to take bets that they don't offer a new venue for us with a cha-ching in the fine print?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Margaret Siemers If we are lucky, maybe they'll be some tools to move posts to a new community but I doubt it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I know people on here do not like Facebook. But a private group would work very well.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Phil Aston Based on my very limited Facebook experience, private groups clustered around shared interests do seem to work, at least to the extent that I maintain my interest in them.

    [ https://www.facebook.com/help/community/question/?id=10154511413743787 ] contains some good advice:

"The group you create would need a privacy of Secret--that way the group can only be found by members of the group. You may also want to use a setting of Require Admin Approval for being added to the group since any member of any group can add/invite people to the group."

  18. I'm not going on Facebook because I'm not creating a Facebook account I don't like revealing my full name or people can find me for starters. I do like what this Pluspora site has with the pods I want to look more into those

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yeh, I'm not going to Facebook either. Too cluttered and full of ads (and politics). I like Steve Hart's suggestion of Minds.
I made a few posts there as well... https://www.minds.com/brydonista

Pluspora could work; it was made specifically for G+ refugees but I don't see how to make a discrete group within it. Other than using hashtags for every post which I think is a big disadvantage.

  20. Can you give any info on what the "Tokens" are on Minds Tom Brydon? You need to log in to really find anything out about the place, and I didn't want to have to "open a Channel" to find info. I will say the place looks good.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think its like a currency - its a way of getting more people to look at your posts.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Tom Brydon That does appear to be the case. It turned me off right away, but it appears you do not have to "charge" a token to view your posts. Learning a new way to communicate is a chore for me! I will continue investigate Facebook, as I already have a presence there.

    ReplyDelete
  23. For what it is worth: I have decided to set up shop on the, "MeWe.com" grid. any and all friends re welcome to have a presence there. And, if you do, please friend me, "Oshi Shikigami," there?

I am hopeful, as there already seems to be many G+ member there, already! So I will stay here, to some extent, until the "last dog is hung," and the swan sings.

You can always contact me in e-mail, PoetessWordBender@Gmail.com as well. Peace and joy! And I thank all for their loving contributions. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oshi Shikigami can you post pics and articles and share stuff like you do over here as a community on it?? I don't think the public can see your posts though?

    ReplyDelete
  25. For the time being, I am posting in both groups. I will continue to do so until I am unable to do so here. I have not, "left" here. I am duplicitous, with both, for now. :-)

And no, unless someone is actually a member of either group, you cannot see the posts, of the other. It is unfortunate, but there is no way to change that, as far as I know.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oshi Shikigami Hmm😐
while we were in the minority not the majority I don't think we'll ever find something that Google Plus was capable of doing that made it stand out from the other platforms

    ReplyDelete
  27. I will settle for the closest equivalent. Knowing there is not exact copy. And I will roll up my sleeves, and get my hands as dirty, as it takes. Because, the other option is to give up. And for this octageneneriane, that is not an acceptable option!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I was just reading the terms of use for the Minds platform. I suggest anyone that decides to go there read them thoroughly and ask questions if you don't understand them. Tokens are cryptocurrency you purchase and if you like a Page/community there you can give the owner a "Boost", meaning you give them money in the form of tokens they can use to purchase ad presence. They are not guaranteeing the safety of your "tokens" on the site and if you lose your access code you are "too bad so sad" for you.
I don't think we will be using them as there were some other things that made me feel uneasy about advertisements being pushed on non paying "boost" members.
If anyone has input on the site's terms of use, let us know here as we hope to keep a running dialogue on this new adventure in our lives.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oshi Shikigami, noted where you are and thank you for your email.
I hope "Michael" wasn't hard for you where you live. I was thinking of you and wondering. : )

  30. Just learning, myself. I have examined about a dozen other alternatives. At this point, MeWe.com, is by a fair margin, the least, of evils, for me.

If I had a wish. I would wish to stay the same as we are now. However, this does not seem to be possible.

So, as far as I have determined, "MeWe.com" is the lesser of evils. I hope I am not wrong. But making no decision, is as bad s a wrong one...

  31. I have, as of yet, encountered any system to keep tally of "bonus points" of any sort. I would Guess that there could be some incentive to collect some tokens, for whatever use. And it could entails a promotion for some.

I dislike any of this "nonsense" as counter productive. However, as I have so far decerned, that tis is for people that wish to monitise there site. And, if someone wishes to do so, it is achievable, to some extent.

Such that it is... IF, IF someone has a better solution, that has the impressive number of members, already members, without such nonsense, I will happily investigate them, post hast.

But sad as it is, we have a finite selection of choices. (Unless you have ALL that it takes, to make a viable exception.) So our realistic choices are narrowed.

After this time, and with the resources I have to work with, I have found the least offensive choice, for myself. If someone else sees different, I would LOVE to know of it. I am in no way married to this one choice. Just let me know, ASAP!

Anything further, feel free to ask. I would love to find better options...

  32. Margaret Siemers I think a number of us will stay with G+ for a matter of months. Google has caught Google flat-footed by this decision and may yet throw us some bones!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Jeff Diver That's my thinking too, and the reason I am taking my time to investigate the other possibilities out there. No reason to rush into anything.

    ReplyDelete
  34. while I am still interested in hearing about any new platforms that may come to light in the coming days, I wanted to unpin this because it's just too depressing to look at every day.
