A canal through the town and under the houses.
The interesting item in this photo is the advert on the left:
"English and American Shoes, made by a qualified shoemaker". For sure, these were not made in China !
Does the area look much the same today?

So before you asked, I had a look on Street View.
The multi window building on the left is still there, and the houses on the bridge still look very much the same. The buildings on the right are gone to make room for a large street. The advert is gone (of course) and replaced by a painting of a bird (see yellow circle).
