An artists drawing box. I have had this for some time but I am unsure of its age.

Leather bound with brass fittings. The brass top handle looks as though it is hand embellished.
The paperwork inside dates from 1880 but that could have been put inside at any time.

  1. Judging from the looks of the contents, I would not be surprised if the date is accurate. Graphite was commonly used quite early on. It's a wonderful box, a great piece! I'm of course curious about your stack of books in the corner and the cute little elephant as well.

  3. I love this Darran Hughes. Dating it would take a good bit of search time for me, but my first impressions of the box are that it is from the later part of the 1800s, say around 1880 on.
Let me share this with our G+ Google Partner site Vintage & Antiques and see what Pam WhimsicalVintage and a some of the British Shopkeepers there may know of its age.
(I'm in the process of moving and can't promise the time it could take to find the answer for you Darran, but I truly do want to help.)
It's wonderful, and I agree with Ann Kennedy above on the books and the cute little elephant. ) : )

  5. Ann Kennedy The books are a couple of table books I tend to dip in and out of. "Londons Dead" Some of the city’s most gruesome stories are unearthed in this compendium of facts and anecdotes addressing London's dead.
The other book is "Tommys War" a sort of 1st world war diary of a man living in Scotland with his wife and child.
The elephant is the guardian of the books "Nellie-Phant".
