CHAMPAGNE UNDERGROUND

CHAMPAGNE UNDERGROUND
The Champagne area in France is where the famous wine is produced. It includes the towns of Reims and Epernay.
The major brands have cellars open to the public. Piper Heidsieck in Reims was one of them. The visit of the cellar was done on a little wire-guided car, similar to a dodgem car. Nowadays, Piper Heidsiek cannot be visited any longer and the little cars run no more. This photo was taken short before the closure. It's a film-based photo dated 2005-11-01.

  1. That is very interesting. There are many underground areas in the midwest US that are used for everything from storage to university offices, due to the many natural caves.

Some of the smaller cellars are natural caves, but the larger ones are man made in perpendicular alleys like American towns. The Champagne underground is clay and can be dug very easily.
Was your office in a cave, Ann ? (:-)

  4. Another excellent post Laurent Truillet. It's a shame they had to stop the ride through the cellers, it must have been wonderful fun to do.
