The Thames in London.

The Thames in London.
Once a source of drinking water

The Great Stink of 1858 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Stink)

By 1860, thousands of tons of raw fecal matter were being dumped into the Thames on a daily basis, as there was no other repository for sewage. Oh, and it was also the main source of drinking water for the city. People died in their thousands from dysentery, cholera, and typhoid. People thought the contaminated air was making them ill.

  1. Hi, Darran, but nowadays the Thames water is clean, isn't it? Not to be drunk, I imagine, but ... I loved the post 😊😊😊

  2. Arlene Gasparello you certainly wouldn’t drink water straight from the Thames today. (It would make you very ill). The water has to be treated by a desalinisation plant before you can consume it. It’s a great advert for making you consume bottled water from Switzerland.

  3. Darran Hughes Of course! But the river doesn't smell bad, does it? I say that because in my city we have a badly polluted river that smells terrible. And nobody finds a solution 😐😐

  4. Arlene Gasparello I dare say in a hot summer an odour would be given off. In the city I work in has the River Humber passing through the middle of it. In a hot summer it can really give off a bad smell. In winter it’s ok, smell free 😁.

  5. Very interesting post, and it's hard to imagine that people didn't attribute the odor to the water! The images do a good job of telling the story!

  6. Darran Hughes Yes, it makes it worse, for sure. But the government here don't want or is not competent to find a solution 😔😔

  8. Darran Hughes It's Tietê River, that goes along São Paulo State, the biggest state in Brazil. The situation is terrible in this river. I'll try to attach a picture.
