Taken at the recent 1940s event in the village of North Thoresby. A few items that would have been on sale "back in the day". (I hate that expression) :-(

  1. When I was in England on a students exchange holiday in 1959, the party visited the Players factory in Nottingham. I wasn't even 15 years old. On leaving the factory, all the boys were given a souvenir box containing every flavor of cigarettes made by Players. I believe that this would be considered socially unacceptable today.
I have never smoked a cigarette in my life. I have kept the sampler a few years and finally gave it away to a friend who did smoke...

  2. Laurent Truillet Smoking itself is frowned on these days, you did right not to indulge.

  3. Wonderful shot of the old Advertising products David Bennett and it looks like some still have the contents in them. Always a sought after condition for collectors as this must be from one. Nice to see items from your side of the pond. Thank you.

  4. Laurent Truillet how very interesting. Wasn't there a smoking age limit for cigarettes in England then? Is there now for that fact?
Ours here in the US have been all over the place since 1886 and was a state by state regulation that could range anywhere from 14 to 18. Right now the standing age to legally purchase is 18, except for California and Hawaii and some municipalities that have raised it to 21.
I'm very glad you avoided the habit. I didn't for many years, but finally came to my senses a few years back and managed to put them down for good. Not easy to do.

That said, I would love to run across a "free" package of Players Factory Samples! Nothing like it that I can see offhand on line. Collectors love things like that. If only we knew this when we were young.
