The Great Patriotic War was over, and the Soviet motor sport was gradually reviving, the experience of creating high-speed cars, although slowly, but accumulating. This was a long and difficult process, since many eminent designers of pre-war times for the time of military operations were retrained into the creators and designers of military equipment, for example, A. Pukhalin and A. Nikitin. And some talented engineers (for example, V. Tsipulin) were repressed at all. And, nevertheless, there were people who can safely be called the flagships of the Soviet car industry. On ZIS it was V. Rostkov, and on GAZ - A. Smolin.

It was Smolin in 1951 who came up with a unique design for a new development of GAZ - the SG-2 model, which the general public is known as the Torpedo. Streamlined drop-shaped body, was completely different from the other known brainchild of GAZ - Victory-Sport. It was a completely new design, created literally from scratch. When developing his project Smolin resorted to the use of advanced aviation technologies.

This machine was much easier than its predecessor, Victory, while enjoying a much better streamlining. The body consisted of duralumin profiles lined with aluminum sheets. The length of the body was as much as 6300 mm, width - 2070 mm, and height - 1200 mm. The weight of the car was 1100 kg. The volume of the standard M20 engine was increased up to 2487 cm3, a supercharger of the "Roots" type and a propeller shaft were installed both on the Victory-Sport, consisting of two parts separated by an intermediate support. The engine consisted of four cylinders with a compression ratio of 6.0. There was also a three-speed gearbox without synchronizers, a SV valve mechanism and one carburetor. The car turned out to be quite powerful - 105 horsepower at a speed of 4000 per minute. But, despite all the technical tricks, it was not able to break the ZIS-112 speed record. The maximum speed of the Torpedo was 190 km / h, the car passed 1000 meters in 33, 7 seconds. On this sports car, two records of all-Union significance were established.

  1. The speed doesn't sound too bad but I guess it's slow for a race car:-) Very interesting vehicle.
