SKEGNESS July 1962

SKEGNESS July 1962
I have read somewhere that Skegness was the dullest place in England to spend some holidays. I don't agree !
These racing cars are beautiful vintage technology machines. Keeping up some speed was a real challenge, It depended upon your skill to stay in line with the electricity strips on the track.
The boy in the car was my English Student Exchange in Summer 1962.

  1. What a great keepsake photo, Laurent. This looks like a lot of fun. Bumper cars were very popular here, but of course they traveled at a snail's pace. How fast did these travel on tracks?

In fact, these were not proper "bumper" cars, but racing cars. The circuit was in the shape of an "8". The upper crossing of the "8" is the bridge bearing the word "erunda".
The cars moved at the speed of a bicycle, and the ride was rather bumpy !
They were not guided by rails, and the metal strips between the wooden planks carried plus and minus polarity alternatively. The skill of the driver was to stay connected to one of each.
