Ice skates in the 1800s were often not blades attached permanently to specially designed shoes. They were strap-on affairs, sometimes even do-it-yourself creations. On occasion the shoes and skates separated....
That's a delightful image! I think some old skates had double blades to clip on. I can't imagine being very stable, but remember our childhood roller skates with a key:-) We survived those just fine!
ReplyDeleteMary Mapes Dodge, who wrote Hans Brinker got me hooked on old skates when I was a child Ann Kennedy. I can never get enough of them to this day.
