Beer street and Gin Lane are two prints issued in 1751 by English artist William Hogarth in support of what would become the Gin Act. Designed to be viewed alongside each other, they depict the evils of the consumption of gin as a contrast to the merits of drinking beer.
There's a lot going on in those prints. Compared to gin drinkers the beer drinkers are practically saintly.

ReplyDeleteOh dear, our protest was on all forms of the demon Rum...and beer and Gin, and anything that intoxicated. At least you guys got to keep beer. Still didn't work huh, perhaps because you would belch less with Gin?
