My wife's grandparents moving house with a hand cart. They are leaving the house behind them for another better one built for them half a mile away.
This house had probably been for sale and had just been sold, as testifies the ripped off poster stuck on the wall between the door and the window.
Chaudfontaine 1927.
I wonder how many trips they had to make back and forth to move all of their belongings. This seems a very rare and special picture, but perhaps their neighbors were with them on moving day with a camera. It's a treasure and not many of us would have a picture of an event like this in 1927.
ReplyDeleteAnn Kennedy We have unfortunately no other information on this photo, but your guess is probably right. The photo seems to be a candid photo taken unexpectedly by some neighbor.
ReplyDeleteI have tried to find the house, but it is gone now.
Another mystery is why the photo was cut in an oval. The original photo is a contact from a 6 x 9 cm negative film.
.......nice picture......I presume that they heated wth coal and had a wood fired stove . I wonder if one could take a nice hot shower.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Michael !
Yes, they heated with coal (plenty of coal mines around).
But they probably took no shower, because showers were not part of the "way of life" in those days. Houses were equipped with bath tubs instead.
Would that have been there own hand cart, did they have some sort of business? Wonder if the photo was that shape as it had been in a frame. Great photo to have.
ReplyDeleteLaurent Truillet I think Mike Perry is right, most likely was in some kind of an album or frame to be this shape. We have many old photos, and some are shaped to fit a frame like this.
ReplyDeleteI also have to agree with Ann Kennedy It is a wonderful look at something we usually never see.
Mike Perry Could be their own cart as the husband was a bricklayer (or mason).
