Here is why one of the characters of my previous postcard makes me think of my brother. This is a photo taken by a street photographer in September 1960. My brother is seen here with my mother. He wears a full suit including golf trousers (as on the postcard).
In 1960, the golf trousers were since long out of fashion, but my father persisted to declare that the golf trousers were not a fashion and that they would go on forever...
As for me, I don't know how, but I managed to escape the golf trousers !
I don't recall that golf trousers were seen much anywhere here. I think they were limited to golf courses from the '20s through the '30s.
ReplyDeleteYour mom appears to be a bit annoyed by the street photographer.
Interesting to see the old cars in the background in 1960, and I think his little suit is quite cute. We'd call those pants "creek waders". I wonder what he had in his briefcase and what your mom was carrying. It's a marvelous picture whatever the circumstance.
ReplyDeleteIt is a wonderful photo Laurent Truillet And Your mom does look like she is either annoyed or wondering what the man is up to that is taking the picture. Thank you for sharing. : )
ReplyDeleteMike Martin I guess my mother was more annoyed by the sun in her eyes than by the photographer.
ReplyDeleteGolf trousers were quite popular over here between the wars, but they died away after WW2. Obliging my brother to continue wearing them in 1960 made him rather ridiculous at school !
Ann Kennedy Judging by the date, my mother was probably doing the shopping for my brother entering "High School" (age 12 to 18). This photo was taken on the central square of Liège. What you cannot see are the major department stores on the right (no supermarkets in those days). My brother's briefcase either contains his school books or was empty if bought on the same day.
ReplyDeleteThe pointed dome in the distance is a church.

ReplyDeleteMy mother was certainly not surprised by what the man was doing.
Street photographers usually used a tripod. All they had to do was to click on their camera and give the victims a ticket with a serial number and their address. If you wanted the photo, you had to send the ticket and pay in advance by postal payment.
What a great photo - I can't recall ever seeing anyone actually wearing golf trousers. I remember the street photographers though - my dad had a great dislike for them!
