I'm not old enough to have eaten K Rations though my dad and uncle did in WW II. I've had C Rats more than once and some were pretty good especially if you had some Tabasco handy. Check out this YouTube channel for more:

My father who served in WWII, would every so often come up with a supply of them until the '70s But I got to eat them. I considered them to be, "Exotic'" and actually liked most of the food.
ReplyDeleteNot only is this interesting John W Poynton but Mike Martin the additional info is great too. Thanks guys.
ReplyDeleteOshi Shikigami My brother had MRE's in Nam, and said they weren't that bad for what they were. I guess the government knew an "Army" runs on it's stomach and tried to do right by them.
ReplyDeleteI also heard once that Tootsie Rolls were invented because normal chocolate would melt, and adding a bit of Paraffin to the candy helped it stay in one place.
Margaret Siemers, I had heard that too. I did not see any Tootsi-Rolls in any of my K-Rations, though :-(
ReplyDeleteI had one not too long ago, Tootsi Roll. It didn't taste like the one's we had as kids. I think they added lots more wax to the mix. Oshi Shikigami
ReplyDeleteif it went to "Nam." You should be glad it did not have, Formaldehyde in it. I have it from several reliable sources, that a lot of beer shipped to V.N. was spiked with formaldehyde, to "preserve" it. Troops said the hangovers from it were severely intense...
ReplyDeleteNo this was a grocery store tootsi. Not an old one. lol I will have to ask my brother about the beer and see if it did anything to him, or if he drank over there.
