When short term food storage (rather than canning) was becoming popular, the magazines were full of ads for foil, waxed paper, etc. just as in the 1940s when aluminum was being widely advertised. DuPont cellophane was also big and homemakers were encouraged to "ask the butcher" for one product or another. I have an old Family Circle magazine that actually has an entire page of foil in it that could be torn out and used:-)

  4. Well, considering that before the 'plastic films', what you had, was aluminum foil, and butcher paper, of some variety, it at least allowed a visual inspection without unwrapping. So an incremental, "Plus," in my book.
