  1. This was what started the cleanup of rivers and waterways in the USA. A burning river was more common then you may think as Industries had been dumping directly into them for decades. I for one am happy it changed.

  2. In 1969 the river Rouge, in the Detroit area, caught on fire, and burned for several days, threatening the Ford factory located nearby. (Also noted for the contamination which burned.)
