"Last week summer had waned. And from coast to coast, in the mountains, beside lakes and on the sandy beaches, Americans clung to August's last warm golden hours. Here you see a few of the hundreds of thousands who streamed from America's No. 1 city to bathe in the Atlantic Ocean. Manhattan Beach lies east of Coney Island on Sheepshead Bay, but within the boundaries of Greater New York. The sun-baked crowds shown here are waiting for an afternoon concert before the Rainbow Shell."

  2. I remember we were told to avoid crowds as a polio prevention measure.

  3. Mike Martin That's right! Our town was sprayed (with DDT I assume). Makes me wonder what we'll think of spraying for zika, 50 years from now.

  4. Ann Kennedy - Fortunately, the Zika spraying so far - I think - has been targeted and not broadcast far and wide. I'd like to think that between Agent Orange and the fate of Times Beach that maybe we've learned to do better.
