  1. Unfortunately, that was not true during the years depicted here for the Cotton Club. Blacks were allowed to perform for whites, but not socialize with them after the performance.
    It wasn't until the late 50s and into the 60s that the great black performers were breaking barriers of color. I has been, and continues to be very hard for blacks in this country. However forward thinking people like you Stephen Russell help to dispel stereotypes and hatred.

  2. Eleanor Roosevelt was really the first major Amercian
    political figure during this era to promote equality between the races. Her tireless but unfruitful effort to get the Costigan-Wagner anti-lynching bill passed was one manifestation of this. ER resigned from the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1939 when the DAR refused to allow singer/diva Marian Anderson perform at Constitution Hall. So I would agree with Margaret Siemers on this one.
