These telephone or electricity poles were quite common in Begium 50 or more years ago. This is the last one that I spotted on 1978-01-08 in Angleur (near Liège). Now they have completely disappeared, including this one.
When the telephone became increasingly popular after WW2, the quickest solution to its expansion was to install such a pole in the middle of a square and lead a pair of wires to all reachable houses, sometimes more than 100 meters away !

  1. Laurent TRUILLET - I've read that most communications and electrical power lines are underground now in Europe.

  2. It's interesting and also interesting that you photographed it in 1978.Had most of them been phased out at that time? It's a wise photo to have taken.

  3. Mike Martin Certainly not in Belgium.
In towns, the telephone cables are usually underground (below the pavement), but the power lines are bundles of insulated wires affixed on the house fronts, usually below the cornices. The TV cables are also above ground and follow the power cables.
In open countryside, everything is above ground.
I imagine it's about the same in surrounding countries.
I'll show you an example in another post.

  4. Ann Kennedy If I had my attention drawn by this one, I suppose it's because they were almost extinct and that I felt that something had to be done

  5. Laurent TRUILLET It seems as if on more and more of my photo outings I see something that I feel isn't going to be around much longer, particularly in rural areas. I think it's a good practice to take pictures of such things.

  6. Ann Kennedy It's never too late to start, Ann. I have done that all my life. When I knew that something was going to disappear in my erea, I was out with my camera. Some of my pictures are published in books now.
My bitterest regret is that I missed the trams...

  7. It's certainly an impressive looking 'pole', never seen anything like it - and no wonder if they have now all disappeared!
