  1. Crazy wasn't it? Still, I got to put one on once, (It is an experience) more to the size of the ladies in the first page. Lots of fun with that costume, and would play dress-up again in one in a heartbeat.

    Hard to explain, but because the hoops are attached in such a way as to move independently of each other one collapses the posterior hoops up toward the head to sit upon one's Throne.
    With a chair, one drops the entire skirt over the chair she is sitting on. (I was told this is why there were chairs against the wall at all cotillions and balls. So she did not become embarrassed when someone was behind her, and she being seated.)  
    As far as a doorway goes, they can be squeezed together to elongate the roundness of them.

    If all else fails, one can untie them, step out of the hoops, enter the doorway etc. and then reattach. Mostly one would need a maid accompanying them for this task to be done.
