This is Coronado Hts., in the Flint Hills of Kansas. It is reported that in 1541, the explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado visited the area in search of the Native American community, known as Quivera.
As it happened, in the early 1930s the WPA (Works Progress Administration) decided to build a park with a view that reminded people of that from Sterling Castle in Scotland. They named it in honor of Coronado, believing this was the western most boundary of his explorations from Mexico to Kansas.

ReplyDeleteBAVEL VELKO The tower is a marker meant to encourage travelers to stop and look at the view. It says, "A Place to Share".
ReplyDeleteGreat photo's!
ReplyDeleteMargaret Siemers Thanks very much!
ReplyDeleteAnn Kennedy Hvala za odgovor
ReplyDeleteBAVEL VELKO You are welcome. I hope it helped you to understand the post. Thank you and enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteThe old Spanish 16th century explorations are pretty amazing stories. The most famous being Coronado in the west and DeSoto in the east. Probably deserving of more coverage in our schools. Frederic Remington's painting of Coronado's departure from Mexico is probably spot on: http://goo.gl/WJ2UkF
ReplyDeleteMike Martin Yes, that's true! I'm not certain how much we read about Coronado is geographically accurate, but his name is certainly prominent in what is now Kansas as we know it.
ReplyDeleteAnn Kennedy - Having been to the Southwest, the sight of those soldiers wearing steel helmets and breastplates in the hot sun is wilting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the rest of the info, following your other post. I know little of that history. Such lovely views.
ReplyDeleteMike Perry You are welcome. I hope to post a bit more about the stone schoolhouse as well if time allows.
ReplyDeleteAnn Kennedy Look forward to that (when you have time).
