All the fourth grade classes get a chance to experience school as it was in the late 1800's at "Old Fort Concho." And, yes, my granddaughter is in the 4th grade this year, so I had the opportunity of visiting her classroom.
The "teacher' is one of the staff at Fort Concho and leads them through a morning of "readin, 'ritten, and 'rithmatic!"
Notice the "air conditioning" on this warm 80º+ morning!
Wow.
ReplyDeleteGreat activity for the kids! Also, but off topic, I'm curious about your cover photo with your profile. That's an interesting object. Can you give us its history?
ReplyDeleteGlad too Ann Kennedy , I have before and will gladly do it again. It is an old mortising wooden block plane manufactured in the late 1800's. It belonged to my Great-great grandfather (Yeh, he was also William James), he had a whole set of moulding planes. - I remember using- playing with them as a kid at my grandparents.
ReplyDeleteI did not know what had happened to them after my grandfather had died until my dad asked me if I wanted them. It took me about two seconds to say yes! Needless to say, I have the entire set.
Will James Thanks so much, Will! Those sound like real treasures and a great story, particularly since you share the name and the experience of having the memories of them as a kid. Objects like that are really special. Thanks for taking the time to explain it again!
ReplyDeleteAnn Kennedy - one of these days I'll get around to posting pictures of some of them here!
