My Grandad was a lorry driver most of his life. He related times when the smog was so bad you couldn't see your own hands in front of you. And during or after the war he would haul RAF parts or aircraft between bases in the smog or in the dark AND on minor roads without roadsigns. The roadsigns were removed during wartime to confuse any invaders. I don't know if it was like that for the whole of the UK but certainly in the south east.
