This is the back cover of a Ladies Home Journal magazine, February, 1915. Can you find the word that is spelled wrong? I can't seem to find it! And if you're curious about Colgate's history, use the link. The famous Colgate clock was built in 1906 in honor of the company's centennial year.

  1. Ann Kennedy  My cynical mind thinks that there is no mis-spelled word, that claiming there is one drew one's eye to really read the ad thoroughly and then discuss it with friends.
Diabolical! Worthy of Professor Moriarty himself! In other words, a brilliant ad!

  2. Laurent TRUILLET OH! I can't believe I missed that after looking at it over and over! Thanks! By the way, the phenomena of looking for a hidden image, not being able to find it,  having it pointed out and then forever being obvious is known as naive perception. This was a good example. It means I'll never see the whole image again without seeing the "boquet" !

  3. Mike Martin That was my cynical approach as well:-) Only to be proven wrong! I wonder if advertising back then was more honest and direct.

  5. Found it! Although if you're from Canada (it says valid in U.S. and Canada) you can also say SPLENDOUR was misspelt.

  6. If it were not for spell check, today's ad would no doubt be, "Find the correctly spelled word". As it appears this is yet another one of the "Reeden, Righten, and 'Rythmatic", that are no longer taught at school to any extent.

  7. Ann Kennedy They even have it the right way above, should have piqued your curiosity on it. :) As Steve Hart pointed out the word misspelled is written differently, however that was correct for that time.
