THE SHELL OIL WATCH BY GIRARD-PERREGAUX (1940): According to a post in a Nat'l Assoc. of Watch & Clock Collectors forum:
"Watch company is Girard-Perregaux. In 1939 they manufactured 30000 skeleton pocket watches about 19 Lignes, about 10s, with a modest 7 jewels, with plates that were supposed to look like the outline of an oil rig. The watch was supposed to be lubricated with Shell Oil........ Didn't work, so as the story goes, the watches were returned to GP, cleaned and lubricated with proper watch oils and then distributed anyway to American Shell Gasoline and Oil dealers as an advertising gimmick."
