School clothes and hair styles about 1895. Love those pigtails with the big bows! Alexander School, Benton County, Oregon. Makes you wonder what was happening behind the photographer...were there a group of moms standing around with wash rags and combs?

From what my grandmother told me about school days (That was in Maryland at the turn of the century) Parents never came to school unless it was to remove a student that was needed at home for one reason or another. The teachers were the parents when the child was at school and most likely any washed faces came from the teachers behest and direction to the older children to help the younger look good.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photo's, I can't stop looking at the faces. Thank you Charlotte Wirfs
ReplyDeleteThanks Margaret Siemers. I love the little toughie in the middle of the first pic. Hs name is Jack. About half of the kids are identified and many are brothers and sisters. My cousin Donna found these in a box of photos she got from her mom.
ReplyDeleteIs Jack the boy standing between the shorter girl and the taller boy? He does have a stern face on him. lol
ReplyDeleteWhat super photos - great faces and characters and like the ribbons or bows in the girls ' hair.
ReplyDeleteReally great photos! What a bunch of characters! I hope Donna keeps digging in that box of photos and passes them on to you for posting:-)
