CORNWALL SHIPWRECK
CORNWALL SHIPWRECK
Stretches of Cornwall's coast are notorious for shipwrecks. The one shown in the picture is from 1888 with the ship in trouble being French - Jeune Hortense - a lifeboat is going to it's rescue. Interesting that the lifeboat was brought to the rescue by a carriage pulled by horses. In the background you can see St.Michael's Mount.

It was very fortunate that the ship was that close to the shore. Those rescues are treacherous under any condition but imagine the time it would have taken to row out into the sea! Very interesting picture!
ReplyDeleteAnn Kennedy As I understand it there were only four crew on board the ship and the lifeboat rescued them.
ReplyDeleteMike Perry Mount St-Michael in the distance ?
ReplyDeleteInteresting as all get out. Thanks for this share!
ReplyDeleteLaurent TRUILLET Yes, this is the Cornish / English mount. There is a similar one in France.
ReplyDeleteMargaret Siemers I also thought there would have been more crew, but I guess not.
ReplyDeleteMike Perry Perhaps they were on shore leave?
