"Victory by Computer - TRS-80 Computer Whiz Kids"

"Victory by Computer - TRS-80 Computer Whiz Kids"

When I found out Radio Shack was going out of business, I lost a little part of my childhood. It was an awesome place of discovery, a place to get stuff to build, and a place to get just about any part I needed to fix my parents' broken electronics.

This past weekend, I put together my latest computer. There were a couple of parts and adapters I could have used, but I didn't even bother going to the local Radio Shack (they are still open here). They wouldn't have had what I needed. I knew it without stopping in, because somewhere along the way they went from awesome electronics store and hobby shop to a sort of lame consumer electronics and over-priced accessories store. #RadioShack

Right now there is an investor group trying to put together a package to save the company, but it will likely never again be the Radio Shack I remember. It'll probably just be another cell phone store.

- end lament over lost electronics store here -

  1. Every Christmas I would go to Radio shack to buy my kids an educational toy to "put together". For a while the toy sat, but then one day...
Yes, I miss them too. Steve Hart

  2. Back in the '80s, I worked as a "Computer Specialist", at radio Shack. I owned and operated every model of the TRS-80s Including the massive "lapt-top and "transportable" models. (PS, they were affectionately referred to as the, "Trash 80s", by many owners!  ;-)

  3. Another bit of American history, passing. A damn shame, though.
