75 YRS AGO THIS WEEK: LIFE Flies the Atlantic: America to Europe in 23 Hours by Clipper. http://tw.gs/27x7gx

"As the Clippers fly, Europe is only 23 hours from New York. Twice each week, weather permitting, the great flying ships wir up from North Beach airport and head out over the Atlantic for Horta, in the Azores, and Lisbon, Portugal. With such a flight LIFE begins this "America and the World" issue, not only because it makes a swift and dramatic transit from the troubled peace of the U.S. to the war world of Europe, but also because it signifies better than anything else what a narrow barrier the Atlantic Ocean has become between two continents."

  1. John W Poynton - I really enjoyed this, John. I was a navigator in the Air Force and loved crossing the North Atlantic. We used to get the occasional mission from McGuire AFB, NJ to Lajes AB in the Azores. Always nicely challenging as we still used dead reckoning, celestial and a couple of other tricks - as opposed to programming an inertial or global positioning system.
    Thanks for posting!
