I remember my dad bringing home big bags of burgers, fries, and shakes from DQ  in Carmichael, Ca. on the very occasional drive-in movie nights (typically Thursdays because the car-load of folks was cheapest). We would gorge ourselves like thieves before we left for the movies (as to not need to go to the concessions). The burgers were wrapped in real parchment paper with colorful DQ teardrop dots, the fries came in a small matching bag (grease soaked of course), and the milkshake cups featured Dennis the Menace. Life was good.

  1. Wonderful story, thank you so much for sharing your memory. Now if we can see a pix of you as a 3 or 4 year old we would be thrilled. Trying to get everyone to do so if they have a photo and can upload. : )

  2. Ditto Margaret's comment! And you have touched one of my all time best and worst childhood memories about my dad bringing home bags of Dilly Bars and milkshakes.  About Dilly Bars, well we could see that white bag coming from a block away! About the milkshakes, I spilled one in the back seat of my parents' brand new car the first time they took us kids for a ride after dark. But thanks for helping my old brain in any case:-)

  4. CS Costa - I don't remember the DQ, but I do remember Carmichael. I went through navigator training at old Mather AFB across the river. There was a really good Italian restaurant called Serritella's. Good times! No, great times!

  5. Kristina Mikkelson Casanova lol, you were lucky. I never knew they had food as a kid. We were treated once in a while to a cone, but my dad's philosophy was he could make it just as good in the Ice Cream Churn as they could with the fancy machines. It was lots of work, but fresh ingredients did make a difference.
    What good times that was.

  6. I would have rather had homemade Margaret  in fact  I do that now   everything homemade and from scratch.  I know what goes into it that way   nothing is better then homemade icecream.
