Coach Tour of Colonial Williamsburg, VA

Coach Tour of Colonial Williamsburg, VA
Being a guy, the first thing I noticed was the camber of the rear wheel. When he drove past, I looked and saw that both rear wheels tilted equally. I met the wheelwright there once. Good guy and a retired Air Force fighter pilot.i
Question...
ReplyDeleteWhy are the wheels tilted ? Why not just vertical ? And why not tilting the other way (like on fast cars) ?
Laurent TRUILLET - That's what I meant by "camber" of the rear wheel. On automobiles, I believe it helps the car stay on a straight line. But a horse-drawn coach? I've no idea.
ReplyDeleteMike Martin There's an explanation in this link: http://www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk/tech-cambertheory.php
ReplyDeleteI'm really enjoying these Williamsburg pictures! They do look like they did in the 60s and 70s except the trees are bigger now.
Ann Kennedy - That's a great discussion of camber. I noticed after this coach rolled past that the axle was not straight, but carved to resemble a bow. At first glance - the picture above - I really thought he was about to lose a wheel!
ReplyDeleteMike Martin Ann Kennedy Way cool learning about Camber this way. Sticks in the head better I think. : ) That truly is a great discussion of camber by the way, I do agree with Mike on that.
ReplyDeleteAnn Kennedy I am a mechanical and electronical engineer, but I didn't know about wheel camber !
ReplyDeleteThanks for the information, Mrs. Einstein !
Laurent TRUILLET Haha! From what I know of Einstein's personal life, and that's not much, I don't think I'd want to be Mrs. E. That said, you are welcome. I like wagon wheels.
ReplyDeleteAnn Kennedy I shouldn't have quoted Einstein. This is more in line with Thomas Edison...
ReplyDeleteLaurent TRUILLET I was just joking:-) My mom would tell me to mind my humor, especially when someone was being kind! There's nothing wrong with being considered Mrs. E and I take it as a compliment!
ReplyDeleteAnn Kennedy
ReplyDeletePlease please please, Ann...
I didn't take it bad for a single second !
And on my side, reconsidering Einstein and replacing him by Thomas Edison was a serious thought. Einstein was a physicist and he couldn't care about chariot wheels, while Edison could well have invented half a dozen patents about them...

You know Ann Kennedy Laurent TRUILLET Matthew Woodall Mike Martin Mike Perry Steve Hart Thex Dar and a whole entire bunch of others that are too numerous to mention, If the rest of the world played nice like the folks here do it would be just a whole lot better place to live in.
ReplyDeleteI think you all are amazing and I love being here with you. : )
Margaret Siemers So kind of you to say so. At least one of us runs with scissors though:-) But have a good night and don't worry about it!
ReplyDeleteMargaret Siemers How right you are, Margaret !
ReplyDeleteA few months ago, before I discovered the Google Communities, I used to have quick looks at Google's public thread, in hope of finding nice photos.
It contained (and still does) a lot of political posts of the very lowest level. Almost all the comments there are only insults, rudeness and hate, and every post is more agressive than the previous one, not to mention the way their authors (cannot) write...
And then, I discovered Vintage Life. I was hooked by one of Ann's photo (a barn) on the public thread and found out where it came from.
You know the rest of the story...
This morning, I was at a meeting with some contacts that I still have in the business world.
I told some people that I had found good friends on Internet. Someone asked me :"Have you ever met those people ?" I said "No" !
He replied "If so, they cannot be your friends, they are only acquaintances i"
What do you think ?
LT
Laurent TRUILLET - I've met a couple of G+ friends "IRL" (in real life) and found them to be just as they seem to be on G+. Perhaps our brave new world is showing us a new way to make and keep friends.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I do appreciate here on Vintage Life is that we all seem to be cordial and intelligent people and not given to the hatefulness you described.
Laurent TRUILLET Margaret Siemers Mike Martin Mike Perry italo tagliabue Thex Dar Steve Hart and the many others that brighten our days! Actually, you have met us, but not in the traditional shaking of hands manner. Rather like the pen pals I had as a child, I consider all of you to be very special friends. That is, we care about the well-being of one another, have interest in the things that are important to each of us, are steadfast in our encouragement of each others' posts and enjoy the community of sharing on a regular basis. My main disappointment in this mode of friendship is that I can't easily and spontaneously deliver cookies to your doors!
ReplyDeleteAnn Kennedy Oh, what a pity, some cookies would have been nice! But thank you for your kind words and the sentiment of your comment. There are some very interesting people in the Vintage Life community.
ReplyDeleteA community as a family is very nice. thanks Ann
ReplyDeleteAnn Kennedy Pen pals ! You said it !
ReplyDeleteIt's a dangerous subject, because once we start on it, nobody knows when I'm going to stop...
I also had a few pen pals when I was 20. The first reason was that being out of High School, I couldn't do student exchanges any more. So I found a list of international addresses and I started to write. Only the girls answered. I can see you smile, but another reason is that I think that boys don't usually write,
I have stayed with two of my pen pals during summer holidays (1964 and 65) ,and I was never disappointed, because they were exactly as their letters suggested.
During my active years, I had no time to writeany more, because I was of course very busy and I saw lots of people all the time. But now, the urge to write has come back, and I am glad that Ann talks about pen pals, because that's exactly how I feel now.
And I am also glad that she thinks we can be friends without seeing each others.
And about the cookies, no problem Ann,
I can go out and buy some,
I'll send you the bill and I'll eat them thinking of you !
Laurent
To all...
ReplyDeleteDo you realize that all this discussion started with the camber of wagon wheels !
I we were now to start a discussion on a machine for cutting the beans, I wonder where that would lead us...
LT
Laurent TRUILLET - Laurent, I'd gladly settle for some chocolate coated Belgian waffles!
ReplyDeleteLaurent TRUILLET I may start that discussion when it's harvest time in the fall:-)
