ARCHERY - 1878
More sport from The Penny Illustrated Paper, this time archery from July 20, 1878. This is what was said about the event:
Archery was the attractive pastime in the charming grounds of Crystal Palace last week. The result of the toxophilites is that among the ladies Mrs. Piers Leigh was placed first, with 598; Mrs. Horniblow second with 560, her real score being 659, from which 15 per cent was deducted as a penalty for previous successes.

Thex Dar I was also concerned by the direction they were aiming - the target is behind them! Natty outfits though.
ReplyDeleteThey look very serious about their sport! I guess they shoot the umbrella if they run out of arrows.
