1878: WARLIKE KAFFIRS AGAINST CAPE COLONISTS
1878: WARLIKE KAFFIRS AGAINST CAPE COLONISTS
A further etching from an 1878 edition of The Penny Illustrated Paper. Their report states:
"We had hoped that our 'Little War' at the Cape was virtually over; but regret to say that it appears from the subjoined important telegram, sent by the Times' correspondent, that there is still anxiety:-
The war news is serious. The Kaffir outbreak has extended to Gaikas, while a large section of the Sandhill tribe is in open revolt. Martial law has been proclaimed over the country."

Nobody said it better than Rudyard:
ReplyDelete"'ere's to you, Fuzzy Wuzzy,
in yer hut in the Sudan,
you're a poor benighted savage,
but a first-class fighting man!"
Mike Martin Wow! I'm not even going to try and follow-up with a comment on that one! Brilliant! Hadn't thought about Kipling for many years:-)
ReplyDeleteYou have some great stuff Mike, I've always liked the Penny Illustrated's but they're almost impossible to get our hands on here.
ReplyDeleteAnn Kennedy - Aww... I just remember little scraps that kind of have some meaning for me.
ReplyDeleteImpossible for me to comment !
ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with the history of old Cornish people !

Mike Martin and Ann Kennedy : Haven't read Kipling for years - but, yes, he sums it up for that period of history.
ReplyDeleteLuc Ansoms I was lucky to come across the book with all of the issues for 1878. It's in poor condition but very interesting with some quality engravings.
ReplyDeleteLaurent TRUILLET Ha ha! Only see that on a Saturday night!
ReplyDeleteMike Perry Wow ! I thought it was the Cornish National Costume !
ReplyDeleteLaurent TRUILLET No, no ... that would be the Cornish tartan ... easy mistake to make ;-)
ReplyDeleteMike Perry too bad I can't just hop over and 'hire' it for a couple of days 😎
