The S.S. United States, the "Greyhound of the Seas"

Has been layberthed at Philadelphia for some years now. Still a beautiful vessel worthy of preservation as a museum.

The $250,000 gift is one of the largest individual contributions ever received by the SS United States Conservancy, the nonprofit group that owns the ship.

  3. Susan Gibbs is the granddaughter of the designer, Francis Gibbs, and is leading the preservation and fund raising charge.
    One detail I've read re the ship's design is that the only wooden, that is, flammable, item Gibbs allowed on board was the ship's grand piano.

  4. Read an article on the ship last week, everything was metal because the government put up some of the funding and specs so it could be converted to military use if needed post WWII.
