Our beautiful bridge, blown up in 1914, was rebuilt after WW1 exactly the same as it was before the war. It is so similar to the original bridge that it is difficult to see the difference when you compare the documents.
This photo shows what it looks like today. The inspiration for this bridge was the "Pont Alexandre III" in Paris (have a look on Google...).

That is a beautiful bridge. A shame that today the bridges are more utilitarian than visual beauties here in America.
ReplyDeleteA real nexus between art and engineering. Lovely lines and probably as strong as any bridge. As Margaret Siemers said, our bridges tend to be "purpose built."
