DAPHNE DU MAURIER AND HER BOOK REBECCA
DAPHNE DU MAURIER AND HER BOOK REBECCA
Author Daphne Du Maurier lived in Cornwall, about 6 or 7 miles from where I live. One of her most famous books is Rebecca which starts off "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again. It seemed to me I stood by the iron gate leading to the drive ..."
The house of Manderley was based on a house she lived in at Menabilly in Cornwall from 1943 to 1969. This cannot be seen by the public as it is screened by trees. Here, though, is a rare photo of Daphne Du Maurier in the 1940's with her children outside Menabilly / Manderley.
Menabilly was the inspiration for Manderley and also features in My Cousin Rachel and The King's General.
I think I have a first edition of this book. Or did. I gave quite a few books away on a recent move. Neat to see a photo of the author in an informal setting.
ReplyDeleteOne of my travel themes is to visit the places with a litterature connection. In England, I visited Jane Austen's house in Chawton, Elisabeth gaskell's in Knutsford and of course all the places connected to the Brontës. I have visited Haworth at least 10 times ! The space here is too small to teall about the others.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your information. I'll go and see the place next time I'm in Cornwall (I should go soon to see the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway !).

Mike Perry loved the book and the film, good to see the real thing.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to see this! I start to hum Reverie every time I think of Rebecca! Wonderful book and this photo is terrific!
ReplyDeleteA superb opening line
ReplyDeleteJohn Campbell My copy is only a paperback, first editions are quite collectible.
ReplyDeleteLaurent TRUILLET We also visit such places. The Lynmouth - Lynton cliff railway is very interesting. I have a few photos on my blog of the railway and area from my last visit on http://www.67notout.com/2013/07/the-lynmouth-flood-coincidence-and-town.html
ReplyDeleteElite Cleaning Ltd. Thanks for the comment.
ReplyDeleteAnn Kennedy I've tried everything to try to see the house for myself but it's not possible. I've taken pics of the lodge and some of the grounds and the local scenery.
ReplyDeletefrank o'shea It is a good opening line and one that many people seem to remember.
ReplyDeleteA great shot: Rebecca and the writer mama!!!
ReplyDeleteMike Perry Thanks for your information. i've had a look at your pictures. I already knew Devon is a nice area to visit. As a railway modeller, I've been to Beer (Seaton) several times to visit Peco, and on the Datmouth, Totnes and Buckfastleigh steam Railways.
ReplyDeleteAnd then we have Broadchuch, and its amazing cliff. I had to find out where it is, and I found it !

Laurent TRUILLET I'm sure you will enjoy the north Devon coast (Lynmouth, Linton, Barnstaple etc) as much as the south. I think Broadchurch is having a tourist boom now!
