Can't say I really miss the days of "Yes, Operator, I'd like to place a long distance call." My grandfather was a country doc and the town's phone operator became his de facto answering service, for example, "Well, Mrs. Jeter, I believe Dr. Brewster went over to Kidd's Store to deliver a baby. He should be home by 2 pm."
Mike Martin Or pouring coins into a pay phone and having to add more during the call! I'm sure the operators served many functions from handling emergencies to sharing the town's news on occasion!
