SAXOLEINE PARAFFIN LAMP OIL ADVERTISEMENT
Jules Cheret designed adverts and posters (circa 1900) for paraffin lamp oil using poses by vivacious 'femmes de Paris'. The actual product itself was not included within the advertising.

  1. I'll bet Saxoleine sold by the barrel due to this suave depiction of its value!
"Paraffin" = "Kerosene" here in the colonies. ;-)

  5. Mike Perry - No need to apologize! It's still fun to remember the translations. Though why Brits choose "gaol" over "jail" remains a mystery. Oh, well, better than being remanded to borstal, eh?
Toughest example was that once I needed what we call denatured alcohol. So I went up to the hardware store ironmongers and asked. Eventually we jointly figured out that denatured alcohol is in fact methylated spirit.  Good times!

  6. Mike Martin  I've never heard of denatured alcohol before - but meths is mostly bought in DIY stores over here nowadays,

The old different trade shops, such as the ironmongers, greengrocers, butchers and so on have sadly disappeared from our town centre. The supermarkets and big out of town stores seem to sell everything, and at cheaper prices - so why bother to go to town. Big business has taken over. I preferred the old ways.
