1917-1920 THE COTTINGLEY FAIRIES

1917-1920 THE COTTINGLEY FAIRIES
In the early 1900s spiritualism was alive in Britain. These four photos became famous as they were supposedly of fairies caught on camera.

The likes of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, believed them to be genuine. Unfortunately. many years later, one of the girls in the photos admitted that there weren't really any fairies - only cardboard cut-outs. Such is life!

  1. Didn't they make a film, imagining that the fairies were real based on the photos?

  2. You shouldn't just spring such news on anyone, least of all your wife.

I don't think there is such a thing as reality, there's only our realisation of how things are . ..

  4. As a very young girl my friends and I used to create little villages for fairies. There was a vacant lot behind my house known as the "violet patch" for the lush, spring crop of violets each year. There were 2 apple trees and moss grew around the roots at the base of each one.  We were absolutely certain that fairies lived there and so we made paths of little stones, and "ponds" made from small shells.  We buried "jewels" for them (usually broken glass pieces) and built little huts from twigs.  Then we all outgrew the fantasy and became cowgirls:-)  And now back to my baking!

  6. Ann Kennedy What a wonderful world you created. Recently some fungi (non poisonous) started growing under a bush in our garden so I created a small temporary garden from them with a silver knight on guard for my grandchildren. Sometimes it's a shame that we have to grow up!

  8. Thex Dar I've just been sitting on a bed (sorry, an island) with my 4 y.o. grandson and we've been keeping the sharks away and keeping up our energy with juice and biscuits. Sometimes though, one of us falls in the 'water' and the other has to do a rescue mission. So, sometimes , definitely, forever young.
