75 YRS AGO THIS WEEK: The new 1940 auto "clones". Emphasis is on comparatives rather than superlatives. http://bit.ly/1rMWh7K

"For 1940 the new Sealed Beam headlight, developed by the industry collectively (LIFE, Aug. 28), as well as steering-post gearshift are now the rule. A sensational engineering change is Oldsmobile's fluid flywheel combined with a mechanical automatic transmission, which eliminates the clutch pedal. Other details on cars about to appear: signals to warn when gas or oil is low, motor overheats or generator misbehaves; softer seats and springs; better insulation and visibility. Price trend for 1940 is unchanged or lower."

  3. John W Poynton Thank you, John.  And yes, an extraordinary time in our history. In my family there are only a couple of people still alive who experienced it first hand.

  4. Just think, they had separate indictors for low oil, temperature, and generator... Now we have a "Check Engine" idiot light. Sad, truly sad.
