HOWARD HUGHES' FLYING PENTHOUSE: Before the Cosmic Muffin, there was the Penthouse. This Boeing 307 Stratoliner was fitted with a luxury interior, including a bedroom, and named The Flying Penthouse after being used in World War II. It was originally owned by Howard Hughes who bought it in 1939, although it was little used. Hughes eventually sold it to oil tycoon Glenn McCarthy in 1949. A Pan American Airlines Boeing 307 Stratoliner was restored for the National Air and Space Museum (the Smithsonian). The fully functional plane is the world’s only remaining Stratoliner.

  1. Wow!  Would like to have had just one flight in that.  And it would have been ok if H.H. was there as well.  Might be an interesting conversation.

  2. Ann Kennedy Can you imagine! I'd like to travel back in time and do the trans Pacific flight to Hong Kong from California on a Boeing 314 “Clipper”.
