I thought as today is 100 years since the start of WWI that you may like to see this. It is a Princess Mary Christmas gift brass box from 1914.

The idea of these was "to send a Christmas present from the whole of the nation to every sailor afloat and every soldier at the front" and was sent to the British forces. I believe this one was my Great Grandfather's.

They made different versions of them but this one still has an opened pack of cigarettes and an unopened pack of pipe tobacco. Originally it would have contained also other items including a Christmas card. You can read more about them on the Imperial War Museum site.

Hope this works as I'm still learning google+ at the moment.

  2. Thank you Ann Kennedy  I came across it whilst sorting through some things in our attic (which is full to over flowing) and thought it was a rather special - so now it is displayed in one of the glass cabinets and not hidden away :)

  4. Our family have all been collecting and hoarding for years so it's not just the attic. There's 3 stables full and a hay shed to go through yet!

  5. Sarah Brooker It sounds wonderful and fun to me, probably because it's not mine to sort!  There is just so much to learn from what our families have kept over the years.  Good luck:-)
