"The first and last bosses of Louisiana met the same end - death by assassination - 248 years apart. One came from Rouen, France; the other from the red-clay hills of Winn Parish, La. At left is Artist John McCrady's conception, especially painted for LIFE, of the shooting of Huey Pierce Long. As if in astonishment, the bronze bust of Rene Rober Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, shot by a mutinous follower in 1687 in the new French colony of Louisiana, looks down in 1935 on the staggering Kingfish."
