These were used in Melbourne Australia from late 1940's (as far as I know, research has been difficult. I can't find a reference....yet). Slowly replaced by lights over 20 years. One of the last was around the corner from my house 1964-5. I was only a little tacker, but I've always remembered them. Very cool I thought.
